Editing

I charge based on word count or by the project. These rates are very competitive and reasonable. Keep in mind that all quotes will be in New Zealand dollars.

Before a quote, I will need to see a sample of work so I can give an accurate estimate. The quote will take into account the type of editing required, complexity and deadline.  Since I specialise in fiction the quote will include an estimate based on word count and as a whole project so you can budget upfront the total cost.

There are different levels of editing. Below is a brief description. I will suggest the kind of editing that is needed when I write up the quote.

Structural Editing - This looking at the work in broad terms of structure. That the manuscript is organised in the best way. This is where expertise in fiction writing is essential in an editor. This evaluates the characters, the plot, the pace and the overall tone of the manuscript. When I do a structural edit I will also give suggestions towards style but since a structural edit can require significant rewrites this is not always in-depth.

Line editing - This is looking at the work line by line. Not for typos or proofreading mistakes but rather to help develop sentences and paragraphs so they communicate the idea clearly and with style. This is the most subjective of all the types of editing and also why a sample edit is always part of the quote.

Copy Editing - If you don't know what kind of editor you need but think you have a pretty clean document then this is what you are looking for. Not only is this looking at typos and grammar issues but at consistency throughout the manuscript. Again I usually offer stylistic advice at this level but again this is only minimal as I will assume that at this stage the manuscript has gone through significant revisions.

Proofreading - This is looking at just fixing up mistakes. Typos and the occasional missing comma. This is not about correcting grammar but finding what has been passed over by previous editors. That last set of eyes on the work before it is published. Because of the surface work, this requires this is often one of the cheaper options. I will offer a little copy editing at this stage but only because I can't help myself but if you rely on a proofreader to fix all grammar issues then there will be some missed.
