Sports and Health in the Media

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

This is a great lesson for those wanting to get level 3 standards from approved subjects. In this, the students will write feature articles on different topics and then put it together into a magazine layout.

First article: Students can do both of these or pick just one.

- Write an article about your experiences with sport and exercise and reflect on what your future will look like because of these experiences. Develop strategies that will help you with life-long wellbeing. (91498)

- Write an article about the risks of outdoor activities and come up with strategies to avoid accidents and injuries. (91504)

Second article: Students can do both of these or pick just one.

- Write an article analysing a health issue in New Zealand. (91461)

- Write an article analysing the contemporary ethical issue in relation to well-being (91464)

Third article: For students that like science.

- Write an article that Integrates biological knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue. This means pick an issue around biology like steroids in sports and look at the science behind the issue. (91602)

Fourth article: More like a visual article than a written one.

- Create a series of images with tag lines that develop an idea.

- Or create an infographic about one of the issues you have written about. (91477)

Create mock-ups of these articles using photos. Try out different fonts and see which ones fit the message you want your articles to give across.

Log your process - what do you do along the way.

Any articles you don't use for the feature article can also be used for the writing portfolio but not the one for the article - the standard is too close and ethically shouldn't be used to double dip. (91475)

Choose your favourite one for the feature article standard. (91497)

Plan out your layout and answer the questions below. Add it to your mock-ups and log for the planning standard. (91494)

1. What is your concept?

2. Who is your audience?

3. What are their expectations?

4. How will you cater to your audience?

5. Who or what is your influence - where can you get ideas from?

6. What are some of the practicalities you had to think of to produce your articles?

7. What obstacles do you think you will face and how will you overcome it?

8. What software will you use to create your layout and why? Some possibilities can be In-design or Issuu.

Once you have done this you can then polish it all up for the next media studies standard. (91495)
