Film study

This lesson is for anyone wanting to do a film study. This will be generic so you can choose any film that you like.

If you make a video essay at the end of your film study you can use it for other standards like the media studies or the create a visual image.

Watch your film and pick a couple of scenes where the characters face a difficult choice or you see them change. You can technically pick any scene but I find these the ones with the most meat on them.

Here are some links to channels that are very useful if you are studying a film.

Watch your film again. Write down how your chosen scenes fit into the rest of the film. Explain why you think they show a significant point in the film. First, explain a little about your chosen scene. Then go through the dialogue and the sound effects - including music. Explain how it helps you to understand something in the scene. If you are smart you'll keep linking it back to that significant point you mentioned before. Once you have the sound out of the way look at everything you see. How are they enhanced by sound effects? The more features you mention the better. If you can twist some together even better. Make sure to always come back to that reason the scene is so important and what we learn about the character or the story from this scene.

You can quote people but make sure to reference it. We assume that the film is not your own but we need you to point out when you get ideas and insights from other places. Don't be afraid to put in your opinion. What I like about English is that if you can prove you are right then you ARE right.
