Music and research

Updated: May 11, 2022

I love music. I've sung in choirs all my life. So it makes sense to combine some music with some English. In this lesson you can achieve the level 3 research in English and in the Level 3 Music. With the same research.

The main difference between the two standards is that in English you need a primary text that you then research and develop a deeper understanding from critical texts. In Music it is more about the music and less about the texts. But you can combine them if you focus more on the performances and the lyrics of a certain band.

Here are some possible ideas for research before I go into the how and the cool things I've found on this topic.

Ideas:

How the rap in musicals has developed over time and what message it portrays to the audience. Primary text - Hamilton.

How music is used to portray character traits in Disney movies and the relationship between sexual orientation and music. Primary text - The Little Mermaid.

How music is used to create suspense in film and the illusions that can be created using music. Primary text - Jaws.

The rise of films based on a collection of music and how it affects the plot. Primary text - Mama Mia

How music can be used to create humour in a film or tv show. Primary text - Shrek.

As you can see you can delve quite deeply into some interesting topics. There is a lot of music in films and not just in your typical musicals but rather to set tone. Like how if you hear some music from Star Wars you know exactly what film you are watching.

The kind of text you use isn't nearly as important as the topic you choose and how deep down the rabbit hole you are willing to go. You don't have to do a critically acclaimed movie that won awards to gain a deeper understanding.

Below are some videos that will help get the creative juices going so you can pick a topic of your own.
