I'm a big fan of animation from Mulan to Howl's moving castle there is a lot to be said for the art form. Today we are going to look at what makes animation films different from other forms of visual texts. If you are looking at close viewing this will be helpful and if you want to write an analysis there is certainly enough in animation to fill a library on its own.
While the western world reserved animation to children's stories the eastern world explored the medium. There are a few documentaries on anime but the thing you need to keep in mind is that while the western world found it too expensive in Japan they used techniques to make it cheaper and the medium was used for things besides children's stories.
This also explains why academy fiction is so popular. But if you really want to go down a rabbit hole try looking up Otaku.
If you are looking for a film to study Akira is a good place to start. Warning there is a swear word in this one.
Another good film is Cowboy Bebop
Can you see some common characters that get recycled in other stories?
But anime isn't the only great story telling medium when it comes to animation.
