Whale Rider

WhaleRider_ShowTilev2.png.2019-11-28T12_

This is written very close to the shootings in Christchurch so I thought I would do a lesson on how we treat people and how we need to see who they really are. I'm going to do this with Whale rider. As a young girl she is a disappointment because of her gender. Something many of us can relate to.

There is of course a book which you could read if you want. This is a popular movie with teachers so you can happily find videos that look at the themes and ideas. Just a heads up that many of them are written or done by students that have no idea about the cultural context, but still fun to watch.

Here is a PDF with some background to the film.

But let us look at gender and all that. Here is an essay someone else wrote that might be useful. If you want to use this for Level 3 Critical Analysis this essay is very useful.

Gender equality has been a long battle and some people say the pay gap will only be closed in 2040. We are talking at least 20 years but this is mostly due to some countries that have a very large gap between what is paid to women compared to men. If you live in a country that has a smaller wage gap you might not be aware that we have a part to play. Many of the jobs that have women working for a significantly less amount to men are industries like clothing. When you buy that $5 t-shirt remember that it probably cost more for the materials than for the labour and that means whoever made it was paid very little.

Here are some sites that are worth reading as they show more of what is happening out there. I hope it shocks you.

1. Pew Research

2. Change Makers

3. Australian Human Rights Commission

4. We Forum

These sites deal with a lot of stats. I'd like you to look at them and come up with generalisations based on these statistics. If you don't know what a generalisation is then check out this website.

What would you do to make a change?
