The Mummy

1200x630.jpg

I studied Hieroglyphs at Uni - though I've probably forgotten most of it - I think the reason it appealed to me is because of my dyslexia. Sounds that weren't arbitrary but instead were connected to something so to remember how to spell something I can imagine an owl in a basket falling into a river while it fought a horned snake.

So we will be looking at movies with an Egyptian theme as well as looking at the history. If you want to learn hieroglyphs I suggest using this site.

Despite being a very campy movie The Mummy actually did very well with its use of the Egyptian language.

Like the tattoos on the faces it says justice on the cheeks and keeper of the tomb on the forehead. The floaty hieroglyphics at the end even relate to what is one the screen in the credits so hats off to the scholars and the movie makers.

Another film that really impressed me when it came to the language was Stargate. (Bener Where - how it sounds) Bnr wr means "How sweet?" when the guy eats the chocolate bar. The moaning about using old translations etc when Daniel wipes all the translations off the black board sounded so much like my lecturer it made me chuckle.

I wouldn't recommend Gods of Egypt. Mostly because of the terrible CGI.

If you want to learn more of the history I would recommend the great courses. He is good but his handwriting is terrible.

There are games and other texts that are inspired by Egypt that try their best to be historically accurate so people can be entertained while learning about the history.

My favourite stories from ancient Egypt is probably the tale of Sinuhe, The tale of the shipwrecked sailor and The story of the wax crocodile.

Try writing up your own name in hieroglyphs.
