The Martian
I love science fiction - I write science fiction - so it holds a special place in my heart though I do have to admit I'm not such a fan of hard science fiction. Mainly because it sees itself as something better than the softer speculations that deal more with the social impact on our future. I think that might be why I prefer the movie to the book when it comes to the Martian. I know sacrilege, especially for an English teacher.
I decided to do this lesson because I found a Ted-Talk lesson on it.
I think the movie redeems itself from the stigma of the more hoity-toity Hard Science because of the strong character in the middle of it. There are certainly lessons for people to learn from this movie/book. Particularly in how to problem solve. Or about personalities.
There are some Earth and Space standards that you can explore with your science teacher around surviving on a hostile planet. Which looks at the effect of extreme environments on you.
If the science wasn't convincing, what do you think will happen to the people watching?
So how important is it?
Name some movies where you couldn't believe the science.
