Movie poster

You will be expected to show your film and the best way to advertise your film is to create a movie poster.

Step one is to look up movie posters that you like. Collect them and make notes about what you like about them. Which fonts do you like? You should be creating your own fonts if you want to pass the design standard.

Take your own images of your cast to get the right images.

Come up with several posters and then get some feedback before you go with a final design which you will then produce to advertise your movie.

Here are some videos to help you design your cover.

I like Phlearn as they have step by step guides.

Keep in mind the 7 elements that all great movie posters must have.

If you want to explore more of the movie poster industry here is a good video looking at the colour schemes of posters.

For your media studies article, you can use your script or this press kit. But don't stint on the design as you will be using this for your Folio board as well. So for your folio board, you will need to go through the design process which is made up of a few mock-ups. Reflect or get feedback, make changes to the design and then make a final version which you will use as your press kit.

Here is a break down of what a Press Kit is.

You can't use a template for the media kit if you are using it for your Folio boards but you can use the templates to get some ideas.

For Media Studies you should make sure the written part is significant. I recommend writing up a review of the film along with a bio of yourself and the others involved in the movie.

I find this the fun part of marketing: creating swag. I recommend making a t-shirt for your movie but it can be anything really, from pens, hats to skateboards. This is for your Folio board so go through sketch and developing process like you would with any other design process.

Once you have several designs you need to mock them up. If you want to see it in real life Redbubble does Print on Demand.

If your drawing skills aren't great then I suggest taking one of the stills from the movie shoot and turn it into a graphic.

You should have a good idea of what will be in your movie and what won't so you can create a movie trailer that conveys the ideas and tone of your film.

This is for the create a visual image standard in English but if you are a good speaker you could replace this activity with a presentation about the behind-the-scenes of your movie.

The essential thing the standard is looking for is how you use images and verbal language to develop an idea. This guy talks a little about that when he discusses theme and tone.

Still don't know where to start then watch this clip.

You've finished making the movie now it is time to let it shine. I've called this presenting as I want to cover two different things. The first is showing the movie to an audience and the other is presenting your work as a portfolio.

Movie Showing

If you are going to do the speech credits then you should create an in-depth look into how you make the film and this should be about 6 mins. If you aren't going to do the speech credits then you should still plan to have a brief explanation of your project and the film for before the showing of the movie.

The movie showing can be as dramatic or low key as you like. This is more for your sense of purpose and completion than for any aspect of gaining the credits. You've done the work it is time to celebrate.

Portfolio

English has a writing portfolio that can be made up of anything you wrote but didn't hand in for your article piece. So this can include your research papers, script and website content. If you have done any practice essays for the exams this can be included as well.

The other portfolio you'll be doing is for visual art. This can be done as the design or photography, depending on your strength.

Design - This should include at least three examples of design processes you have completed. This could include logo designs, swag, websites, movie posters and character profiles like the one shown below. This can be still images or a short film. If you end up doing the presentation about the behind the scenes then you can create a video showing your work and process that can be shown at the presentation and used for your portfolio.

Photography - As part of your planning of the film you should be taking stills. Of your characters and the settings. As you film, you should also take images of the process. Those moments that contrast the tone of the film with the process. You should move the tone more towards what the film will portray as your images progress. By the end, you should have developed your idea through images. A suggestion is character profiles or something else that will convey the tone of the images.
