The film we are going to study today is the Hunt for the Wilderpeople. You can check it out here. But it started out as a book which you can see here.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a dark comedy. If you aren't familiar with dark comedy, you can check out black sheep or watch these YouTube clips.

We are going to have a closer look at a couple of scenes. The first is the Funny Funeral scene.

A funeral is the saddest thing in most people's lives and yet this one is ironically funny. This is created by the pastor/priest who is played by Taika Waititi. Come up with reasons this scene is funny.

This scene in contrast is supposed to be happy but it has undertones of sadness. Come up with a list of reasons this scene is sad.

See if you can list other films that are sad and funny at the same time and see what connects them.

 

The film has the two travelling through the National Park. It is wild country and at the moment there is a lot of controversy about the dropping of 1080 into these areas. The problem is the impact that pests have on the native wild life. To have a better idea of pests check out these videos.
